Art can be created from anything; even thousands of tiny grains of sand!

In 2009, Performance artist, Kseniya Simonova came to public attention as the winner of ‘Ukraine’s
Got Talent’, for her stunning live sand performances.
Using volcanic sand spread over a light desk, Simonova creates fantastic and touching stories with only her materials and her bare hands.

Handwriting your work
Mar 6th, 2014 by Dusty

Today, so much is done digitally, using computers, devices and smartphones. Many of us always seem to be within arm’s reach of one of our devices. With all this, it can make it hard to make a proper connection with the projects and ideas you are working on.

Handwriting

Handwriting

It can seem sterile and far away, somewhat unreal or foreign. That is why I like to handwrite my work a lot. True, I did write this on a computer, but the idea and outline for the piece was handwritten with care and love in a notebook dedicated to my blogging – and maybe a few doodles.

You can do a lot of good for yourself by handwriting your work.

I do it for many reasons including to help my concentration, to keep my hands loose so my drawing isn’t affected and even to practice my language skills, by writing notes in a different language!

Handwriting notes is said to boost productivity, creativity and morale when working. And handwriting even unrelated things like work notes, shopping lists and diaries can improve your creativity and writing skill for your fictional work too – so perhaps writing that shopping list will help you get your novel done!

Having tangible notes is also very useful for having a hard-copy back-up, in case something goes wrong with your computer.

I recently lost a ton of notes on Japanese from my phone thanks to a minor slip-up and I was so grateful that I still had my paper notes left. One mistake on a computer can lose your work, but paper is a little easier to keep track of.

If you think this could be a good idea for you, perhaps trying it out for a week or two first.

How could you start writing more and does it help you? Let me know!

Attack of the Doge!!
Feb 24th, 2014 by Dusty

Memes come and go a lot as they rise and fall in the buzz of internet chatter, but one recent meme I find particularly funny and adorable.

Doge

‘Doge’ is a small Shiba Inu dog who the internet has crowned ‘Doge’ (despite no-one being quite sure how to pronounce it) and taken to captioning pictures of them with phrases such as “so fashion. Much style. Wow.” Or “Such trubble. Much scare. Wow.”

The usage of this meme has grown even beyond the catchphrase – even a composition with Doge’s head photoshopped onto Snoop Dog. I don’t even need to say the caption of this…

With this cute little dog(e) filling the internet (and even television, merchandise and professional business coach’s keynote speeches), it really goes to show that you can never predict what will take-off and become popular.

Doge

If it were not for people putting up stuff like this online, we would have no memes or doges to laugh at – much sad! So keep in mind that your creativity, however big or small, can fuel or trigger something incredible. Don’t keep your funny ideas inside, guys! Write them down, use them – share them with the world! Maybe you could create the next big thing.

Much exciting!

Wow.

A really uplifting video – Instructions For A Bad Day

But Love
May 31st, 2012 by Entropy

But Love

Stepping into a new life every day,
touch is fleeting, but
love endures.

But love is just
a construct of my mind.
My only hope that it is
similarly constructed
in yours.

Attached silken bond,
binds as it winds
between us, like
a velvet hawser,
from me
to you.
And back again.

But love cannot be known.
Are you lying
as you are lying next to me?
Does silken bond bend
from heart to heart?
Or hip to hip?
Or flap free like
toilet paper
from my heel?

But love Is trust.
Is that me
trusting you,
or am I trusting me?

Animated short LSF Film Challenge
Oct 23rd, 2011 by Entropy

Several members of The Spurious Collective have been hard at work making a  short film for the London Screenwriter’s Festival Film Challenge 2011.

The challenge was for filmmakers to make their own version of one of the two winning scripts from the Screenwriting contest. Both scripts were about the London riots of August 2011 and both set human relationships against material things. Group members Entropy, Trixsey and Dusty, who were involved in the making of the short, which they wanted to be a bittersweet animation with a bit of stark realism thrown in at the end. We think they did a pretty good job!

Poem: ‘The day’ #Napowrimo
Apr 26th, 2011 by Trixsey

April is National Poetry Writing Month which The §purious Collective have entered in order to write a poem a day for 30 days throughout the month of April 2011!  This poem is by Trixsey:

A poem for day 23:
The day

Grey skies and misty eyes

Murky waters and nervous sighs

The day could still be worse

Standing at the jagged edge at the creaky ledge

The trees whisper a small pledge

The day could still be worse

I call to you about this unspeakable curse

The one that cannot be put short and terse

The day could still be worse

Poem: “Searching for a word” #NaPoWriMo
Apr 6th, 2011 by Dusty

April is National Poetry Writing Month which The §purious Collective have entered in order to write a poem a day for 30 days throughout the month of April 2011!  This poem is by Dusty:

A poem for day Six:
Searching for a word

When I search for a word

Nothing comes to mind

When there is a page to be filled

In too little time.

My head becomes blank

A scrambled dictionary

An inability to think

Or create poetry.

I sweat as I type

No inspiration in sight

When I notice the words

Appearing right before my eyes.

I know I can do it

I believe I’ll last

And write a poem each day

For the rest of this month.

Poem: “The Art” #NaPoWriMo
Apr 4th, 2011 by Dusty

April is National Poetry Writing Month which The §purious Collective have entered in order to write a poem a day for 30 days throughout the month of April 2011!  This poem is by Dusty:

A poem for day four:
The Art

The enthusiastic call rings out through the set

And everyone freezes suddenly silent

As the man with the boom and a keen ear listens

No-one around even dares to share whispers

When he calls “clear” the work commences

And the director orders all to their places

He calls out to roll

Then he cries for action

And the Actors get to work portraying their fiction

The story is shot in all number of cuts

And the work of the editor quickly piles up

The film will be snipped

And the dialogue trimmed

At his desk he will slave

For many long days

Until it is polished to the greatest degree

Ready to be enjoyed on the big screen.
